Serious Problem with Politics

August 26th, 2008 by Nicole

Browsing the channels and coming across the Democratic National Convention was the biggest waste of the last 30 minutes of my life. I’m still astounded by the unnatural, insaneness that occurs when Hillary entered the stage. I understand that she’s still trying to unify the party, but seriously, it’s crossed over into just theatrics. It’s also events like this that really brings up my root problem with politics - it’s overblown during elections and the rest of the time we’re completely in the dark about what’s going on in our country and the rest of the world.

We get to judge candidates based on a very limited knowledge of who they are as people and instead have to decode pre-written responses and past choices. Realistically it’s like Carlin said, “they don’t give a shit about you, they don’t give a shit about you.” Politicians play the game and it’s difficult to really connect on any level considering their position.

So no voting, that’s my short reply. I’m disappointed at the system and I don’t believe that anyone working within it really can do what’s right. I find it entirely ironic that of all the “democratic” nations, ours - which seeks out to install “freedom” in other countries - cannot even institute a voting system that says whoever gets the most votes, wins. No - we’re still too stupid to make our own decisions and therefore big business and banks will continue making them for us and thinning the middle class out until we’re back to the haves and the have nots and no one in between.

Alright, I’ll turn off the tube, as usual it’s rotting my imagination and depressing me.

oh you know i have to respond to this one…

You’re right - it’s ridiculous how much people get sucked into the fiasco of big campaigns (i.e. the presidential) and then don’t pay attention to what’s happening and therefore, don’t hold these people accountable. It’s a combination of so many factors, but it really comes down to us and our ignorance and our apathy - the press is out to make money these days so the sexier the story the better cuz that’s what we’re all looking for. It’s our ignorant ass faults.

and as an aside, people can find out what’s happening day-to-day in washington. no, it’s not on cnn 24/7 or the networks, but it is out there. they just have to look for it and pay attention.

Please don’t take offence, my “our” is all-inclusive: not talking about one group or another, but rather the collective citizens of this ass backward country.

and yes, we should get rid of the electoral college and make every vote count, but in order to do that people must be a part of the process - give these fuckers a reason to listen to you. people who don’t vote (at the very least) silence themselves.

I’m not going to try to talk you into voting in the presidential election. Shit, it’s New York - it’ll go blue. BUT there are important local races going on that you should lend your voice to. i don’t know the ins and outs of a lot of issues in ny b/c i’m not living there at the moment, but i do know that if we’re able to get just 2 or 3 of the “good guys” elected in the state senate, then marriage equality could be a reality in new york. and shit, i’ll bet there are a number of other very important issues that i (and probably you) care deeply about with the same fate. so on election day, go to your polling place, skip the top of the ticket (presidential) and then cast your vote in the local elections - city council all the way up to state senate and general assembly. boycott the shit out of those douchebags, but don’t sit out your local elections. (hell i’m willing to do the research on your district to let you know who’s running and where they stand on issues you care about)

    i gotta say…
it’s been really difficult not to go off on a tangent about how much sarah palin sucks and how brilliant the republican party proved itself to be…once again. or about how hillary really should be the fucking nominee and that i’m so sick of obamania. or about how much i hate the press for feeding into people’s douchebaggery and not focusing on the issues, but instead focusing on the damn personalities
…it’s been difficult, but i tried to stay on point ;)
